Have you spotted New Zealand mental health advocate Mike King cruising by on an UBCO 2X2?
On 1 October Mike embarked on an epic 29 day “I Am Climate Hope” tour – an historic journey riding an UBCO electric motorbike on a 5,000km odyssey from Auckland to Cape Reinga, down to Bluff, and back to Auckland.
Joined by a dedicated team of supporters and backed Genesis Energy, Ara Ake, and the team here at UBCO, the tour will visit towns and cities along the way, hosting talks and engaging with communities.
The tour aims to create a platform for open discussion on the challenges young people face due to climate change, while offering hope and practical solutions.
“The health of our planet and the wellbeing of our children are inextricably linked,” says Mike King, founder of the I Am Hope foundation. “This tour is about acknowledging the anxiety and distress that climate change is causing our young people, while also offering solutions and hope.”
Mike felt "pretty sore and knackered" after tackling Northland roads in the rain on the first leg, but with improved weather and a body adjusting to the ride, he's now conquering the South Island. He's travelled the west coast on his way to Bluff before heading back on his return trip to Auckland.
We're thrilled to report the bike's performing admirably! Mike's covering long distances and enduring long days, proving the bike's capabilities on this demanding journey. So far, the only problems he's had are two flat tyres!
“It’s all about letting the kids know they’re heard, that people are out here doing something for them, and showing that we can actually make a difference together,” says Mike. “Yeah, it’s tough, but it’s worth it if it means making a change for the next generation.”
Check out the details to find out where Mike will be heading next. Head along and be part of the kōrero about climate change and how we can make a difference for our young people. Plus, if you attend one of the events along the way you can enter the draw to win an UBCO 2X2 Adventure bike!
We’re proud to be providing the electric motorbikes for Mike’s incredible journey. Our bikes represent a sustainable way to travel which aligns perfectly with the tour’s message. Not only are we helping to raise awareness for Mike, but we’re also testing our bikes' endurance on such a demanding journey. What a way to explore Aotearoa's stunning landscapes and connect with amazing people.
Still – it takes a special kind of person to commit to a month-long 5,000km ride at sub 50kph. Good on you Mike!
